Tree lights

I was just remembering the xmas tree lights we had when i was a child they were those little candles you have on birthday cakes etc they use to be in little holders that you clipped to the tree do you remember them?
There would be an outcry if you used them now but they were safe if you kept an eye on them.

Re: Tree lights

They now do candles but not the wax kind and without that wonderful Chrstmassy smell..No ..I don't mean the house burning down. And you knew you were growing up when you were allowed to help light the candles. Don't forget the angel chimes in the window also lit by candles

Christmas doesn't smell the same these days does it!

My Mother was a bit sniffy about paper chains so I loved making them at friends houses. So much nicer than this tissuey things and foil efforts we had, that folded away for each year.

I used to tear them deliberately so we could get new ones.

Oh yes Aysa. You had to twist each light...and you could never find the spare bulb.

I spent many Christmases with my Uncle's family, he was a farmer .
On Christmas eve he took his axe and went across the fields in search of a holly tree complete with berries.
The newly felled holly tree was placed in a tub like any fir Christmas tree, the tub was covered in green crepe paper and a red bow, the tree was decorated with baubles and tinsel then lastly came little silver holders and red candles.

What a picture it made the lighted candles were reflected in the shiny leaves and berries .

Because fresh holly doesn't burn very well there was little chance of the leaves catching fire, they never did .

I don't know why we had holly, I can only assume out in the countryside poor people made use of what came to hand rather than buying something .
