War on Rhino poachers

The rhino is being poached to the brink of extinction .
This is due to the price that it's horn brings on the black market .
I wonder if the rhino will survive or just be another animal we have wiped from the face of the earth for nothing ?

I loathe this sort of thing. The beautiful elephants are suffering terribly as well. And as for lions, well - I saw the other day that thousands are being bred just for the shooting.
These men are wicked, evil buggers and I sincerely hope they get some sort of come-uppance one day.

Re: War on Rhino poachers

It says on the news today that the battle is being lost.
Rhino poaching is 30% up on last year,
They have reached the tipping point of no return and even the little orphaned ones - their mothers killed for their horns -are hidden away in secret camps because as soon as they grow horn they will be targets.
the rangers who try to protect them have a dangerous jobs the poachers will stop at nothing to kill rhinos and have no problem killing rangers either.
The illegal wild life trade has been taken over by criminal gangs who have huge financial resources organised trafficking setups and high tec weapons.
The principal markets for rhino horn and elephant tusks are Vietnam and China.

Re: War on Rhino poachers

I had the privilege of actually walking some distance with 4 white rhinos. They were guarded 24 hours a day by rangers who went everywhere with them. They were the last 4 white rhinos in Kenya and were a gift from South Africa, all white rhinos in Kenya had been killed by poachers. The rhinos were, I thought, lovely. They are not at all aggressive like the black rhinos, which no doubt explains why they were all killed and the black ones were not. I have my treasured photos of myself with the rhinos and some of Mr Clumsy too of course. I think I was so lucky to have that experience.

This sad state of affairs is made even worse by the fact that much of the ivory is useg in carving for which there are perfectly acceptable substitutes. I wonder at what point the material becomes more valuable than the craftsmanship? For example is the wood/metal/ivory more valuable than the art.

Re: War on Rhino poachers

Someone must be buying the ivory we know its the Chinese but we carry on buying their sweat shop crap because its cheap while wealthy people buy works of art made from elephant tusks.
as for the rhino horn a completely usless ( except to a rhino ) mixture of hair this is used as a medicine or aphrodisiac whu they cant use viagra instead I dont know, If there was some way to poison the horn without injuring the animal it might be effective eventually . But time is running out fast for the rhino.
