Stay of execution

I was 'looking forward' to my eye operation (vitrectomy and peeling of epiretinal membrane) scheduled for tomorrow midday, when I received a telephone call from the eye hospital this morning. Due to an emergency admission, my operation has had to be cancelled. I have another appointment for next Thursday at 7.30 in the morning (eh?!).

Actually, I didn't feel any sense of relief as I was fully aware that the ordeal is yet to come! The operation will last for one to two hours and, although painless (or the earlier cataract operation was), there is always the nagging concern that something might go wrong. I am also worried that I shall sneeze at an inopportune moment (I seem to sneeze on a regular basis - every day without fail and without warning), and with three needles in my eye the consequences don't bear thinking about.

I was advised to take Pred Forte eye drops four times a day for a week before my original appointment, and am concerned that the contents of the bottle may run out over the next week. I have had no success in asking the eye hospital staff for another prescription, and my GP cannot provide one without a letter from the hospital!

It's like banging your head against a wall, though of course I don't think such a thing would help much!

Tough call JBR, cancellations prolong stress, rather you than me.

Re: Stay of execution

I'm sorry for your dilemma and unanswered questions, JBR, it must be a worry, plus very disappointing when you are all mentally geared up to go in.

It doesn't sound as if your GP is being very helpful regarding your eye drops if you don't mind me saying. I would have thought the least he could do is offer to phone the eye dept. for you.
I wouldn't have been happy with his response.

How very frustrating. I hope you manage to get some sense out of someone soon. Keep trying.

I don't blame my GP, Mups. Actually, the person I spoke to was the ubiquitous receptionist, and she was simply following procedure.

I could ask for a telephone consultation with a GP who, of course, will know more than the receptionist.

However, I have been advised to speak to one of the specialist nurses at the eye hospital tomorrow and see what she suggests.

The thing is with Pred Forte (as with other steroids) you cannot suddenly stop taking them; they must be reduced bit by bit.
Should the bottle run out before my operation, I shall have no means of doing that and it may compromise my health. I'm sure the nurse must know that, so I expect a constructive suggestion!

Having had a similar deferred/re-scheduled surgery experience earlier this year, I can empathize with you .....

Good luck with your calls tomorrow and with your surgery next week .....
