We are still part of that FTA. Are you saying we are in deficit with ourselves? Or do you mean we have a trade deficit with certain countries within the EU and a surplus with others

If we leave will we then have a trade surplus with all the EU countries?

So will that change the deficit into a surplus?

No, we are in deficit with the bloc as a whole!
E:-rgo, we spend more with the bloc than we recieve by a considerable amount as you know, and have never denied to
my knowledge? In my simple mind that means we lose about
100 billion each year to the bloc? Not to mention that eu
Steals approx 80% of OUR fishing resources!
I know we will have to replace some of those imports with
others, But we can do this by buying from countries in the
wider world which generally are much cheaper than eu products!
Where does the 100 billion deficit money come from l ask
you??
Regards Donkryman!

Donks that's not how it works. UK businesses as a whole import from the EU goods in total worth of 300 bn. They sell that to their customers, after adding a percentage. Assuming they add 30%, the profit for british businesses is 100 bn, equalizing the trade balance. Those 100 bn profit can be invested in the UK, your government gets some of it through taxes.

Re: Students indoctrinated with Anti-Brexit ideas?

If you are talking about the trade deficit then not sure of your sources. But according to stats in 2018 it was as follows. Overall this would be a trade deficit with the global trading partners of -20bn.

"The UK had an overall trade deficit of -£64 billion with the EU in 2018. A surplus of £29 billion on trade in services was outweighed by a deficit of -£93 billion on trade in goods.
The UK had a trade surplus of £44 billion with non-EU countries. A surplus of £83 billion on trade in services outweighed a deficit of -£39 billion on trade in goods."

I've no idea why anyone thinks we will stop importing from and exporting to the EU economic region. Anyone who thinks that needs to think about it a little more!
