For you Aussies

Found this very informative.

Always thought Darwin was a one off attack and the rest of the country was never attacked.

Re: For you Aussies

Good post. THank you. My Uncle in the RAAF was stationed in Darwin in WW2. He was killed in the first raid. Darwin had the crap bombed out of it by the Japanese in more than 60 raids. It has also been flattened by cyclones a few times as well. The worst in 1974. BUt they just keep on keeping on.

Re: For you Aussies

Far to the south of Darwin (116km) is the Adelaide River War Cemetery which is one of the war cemeteries created for servicemen killed on active service in northern Australia. It includes 63 civilians killed in Japanese bombing raids including 9 postal workers killed in the first raid on Darwin - when the Post Office was particularly targeted.

Something else I never realised until I lived here was how close the Battle of the Coral Sea was to the Australian Coast.

The US Bombers engaged in that battle took off from Charters Towers in central Queensland, They knocked down a Pyrites Works chimney on the top of Tower Hill in line with the runway to make it easier for the heavily loaded bombers to get into the air.

I think the 3 aircraft taking of on a training flight was shocking.

Re: For you Aussies

Some great photos .

I was in Darwin some years ago . There are still the old war time airstrips running parallel to the road . We went to the war museum which naturally had a lot about the attack . As we were leaving a coach load of tourists drew up and filed in they were all Japanese ! It felt very weird .
We did go to a war cemetery along the road I can’t remember if it was the Adelaide River one .
( We did go to the Adelaide river and did the jumping crocodile boat trip . )
