Re: My husband had to ask my fathers permission to marry me (Split thread)

If men had to go through childbirth, I suspect there would be more only children .........

If Men Gave Birth

If men gave birth
The world would be under populated.
No family greater than one child.
As the labour was unendurable and unrepeatable.

If men gave birth
Tales of courage and suffering bravely borne
Would pale the faces of the uninitiated.
The Victoria Cross in the face of such fortitude, commonplace.

If men gave birth
In the clubs and pubs throughout the land,
Stretch marks would be revealed and measured
To the admiring gaze of the cognoscenti.

If men gave birth
Eighteen years of paternity leave a right
Generous Allowances, benefits and tax breaks
To be expected by the paternal heroes.

If men gave birth
Who would raise the precious offspring?
The fathers worn out by being enceinte for nine months.
The answer is obvious, the answer is plain, WOMEN.

I always had a good pair of "saunnies" (sandshoes) and would run for my life if a boyfriend got serious!! Never wanted to get married!

Re: My husband had to ask my fathers permission to marry me (Split thread)

It was expected that we would marry and marry well. My father said that in the interim his girls could either teach or nurse! We didn't have a choice! He said I wasn't bright enough to teach so I had to nurse! I hated it so got married after I chucked it in after 9 months.

Fortunately we were much more enlightened where our own three daughters are concerned, and they did their own thing, but they ask for our advice, and still do from time to time.

Re: My husband had to ask my fathers permission to marry me (Split thread)

Marriage never appealed to me either, and as was said there were few professions open to women in those days. I minored in education, discovered I disliked teaching and ended up in the business world. I was interested in archaeology, entomology and journalism, but women stayed in the museum sorting shards or specimens and covered the "Women's Pages". all the good jobs went to men.

Thank God times have changed.
