I would think a great many are for spying on us. Many more are military/home security for detecting "things". For example they can detect significant flashes of light, heat emissions, missile launches and likely lots of other things. I would imagine quite a few are pointed out into space looking to detect asteroids and any other moving objects. Naturally there will also be some powerful weapons up there too. I would guess they could fry sizable parts of the globe if they so desired. Another reason nuclear missiles are redundant TBH. Satellites would shoot them out of the sky in seconds. Nevertheless it is in the interests of the powers that be to maintain the fear factor and have us believe raving lunatics are poised with fingers on the button.
