I've had our new automatic car for a month now (Toyota Prius+ 7 seater for the grandkids) and, although I've never driven automatic before, the transition has been seamless. I would never dream of attempting left foot braking - my left foot doesn't have the delicacy of touch that my right foot does. I think the kind of accidents people have been referring to owe more to the state of mind/physical abilities of the driver than they do to the car.
