Re: Can You Ice Skate? Any Stories To Tell?

Hi Art, yes, I did skate. I grew up in a little town on the river and we skated all winter, and went swimming in the river in the summer time.

I was nothing special, but my sister danced on ice. She was good at everything...

Used to go to the Silver Blades early 70s, always remember Nielsen "I can't live without you" being thumped out on the Wurlitzer organ.

Never tried it but I just know I would be useless at it. Well I had to be bad at something I suppose.

When you started in the old days, you could get what looked like leg calipers, which attached to the boots to support your ankles.

Re: Can You Ice Skate? Any Stories To Tell?

I went as a teenager with a youth club. I couldn't ice skate but got held upright and escorted around the rink between two girls (I wasn't grumbling). Then they said I should try on my own and let go. I rather unsteadily made it to the side and stayed there. The hired skating boots were quite painful too.

I was good on roller skates as a kid though and went to a rink a few times when I took it up again as an adult.

Re: Can You Ice Skate? Any Stories To Tell?

Hi Art...yes, I grew up ice skating. My kids also grew up with skates on...and both played hockey.

When I was 39 and my daughter was about 10, her coach decided that a mother/daughter hockey game was in order. It was recommended that the mothers wear helmets...I did not. I was taking a face off at centre ice...when suddenly, I was flat on my back, my head hit the ice, not once but three times in all. It's certainly true that one sees stars during such an event.

The referees, of which my son was one...escorted me off the ice and into the penalty box...for "delay of game."

Later I ended up in the emergency dept...with a huge lump on the back of my head and a concussion...

I don't believe that I've skated since...

Re: Can You Ice Skate? Any Stories To Tell?

I've never tried ice skating but I really enjoyed roller skating.
We used to have races in my childhood days and I'm embarrassed to say I often came first

Doubt I could stay upright on them these days though .... I lose my balance on the bathroom scales now!

Yes, started when I was about 4 years old. Used to love a Saturday evening at the Rink when I was a young Teen, skating round in a massive circle with my pals to all the latest Chart Hits.
