Making molasses

I'm reading Thoreau's Walden and noted he was able to make molasses out of both pumpkins and beets. I've never heard of anyone making it before... anybody tried it? Do you suppose it's just a matter of cooking up a sort of jam then reducing it to a sticky mess?

Re: Making molasses

Can't help here. I thought molasses was made from cane sugar, I'm not sure if treacle is the same?

You can make molasses from sugar beet, but it is different from cane molasses. Not as nice, basically
