That geezer in the long coat is talking about King Malcolm on TV as we speak. Spooky.

That's what I said ... the shebang of countries.
And yes, First Elizabeth of the shebang but I understand the convention has been to continue on from English Kings and Queens regarding the ordinal numbers. ..or regnal or whatever they are called.
I get your distinction though.

Nah, Robert Bartlett. I don't think they have any film from that period so he just keeps wandering about in his long coat.

Re: Monarchs

I suppose if we take the distinction to it's logical conclusion ... there would have been no King Henrys of England ... all eight of them.

A bit like we had the Earls of Wessex and Mercia before there was a true first king of a united England ? (or the territory now known as England).

Could get very confusing.

See that's what confuses me, all those regnal names, what's that all about? it would be so much easier if they had used their real names.

Re: Monarchs

You think that's confusing ..

Try this.
i think the beginning and end of a year used to be calculated by the regnal year ... so, 6 Henry II ..would actually be the sixth year of the reign of Henry II and it began on his coronation date.

A right headache.
