Back to School Robbery

The new school year starts in February so the supermarkets and department stores are full of Back to School specials.

Major Australian retailers Kmart and Target have come under fire for selling $2 (£1) school uniforms while factory workers are paid below levels that can cover basic living expenses.

The $2 polo shirts that are the focus of Target's national "Back to School" campaign are produced in Bangladeshi factories where wages can be as low as $97 a month.

This does seem very low surprisingly for Australia where everything is so expensive

Things are not going so well, at least here in America, with these super chain stores. Just today Walmart has announced that they plan on closing about 100 stores. Walmart has always been proud to announce its low prices, but its low prices are things of the past. Causing its loyal customers to shop elsewhere

Re: Back to School Robbery

It's exactly the same in the UK, Bruce. We see it every time we go over in summer as all the ads are staring there in August. All made in China, Taiwan etc where workers are paid next to nothing. But with the cost of bringing up families these days you can't blame parents for for buying them.

Muddy - food is dearer here but clothes tend to be cheaper.

Capitalism at its best isn't it ? Eventually we will all be as poor as they are with just a few holding all the wealth.
