Life is a gamble, it always ends in tears, but why should I be miserable along the way?

No it isn't. Life is an absolute 100% dead cert. You are born and you will die.

If you have to have gambling in your life to avoid you being miserable then really you are missing out on a great deal.

Gambling is a short lived rush that always ends in disappointment in the long run. All gambling is rigged and that downside sits on top of the irrefutable fact that the odds are not in your favour either. People make all manner of excuses as to why it's ok to gamble. The excitement being one of them and yes I accept that the occasional one-off event is worth the entertainment. A day out at the races, a night at the dog track and so on. But that's a world away from routine gambling, daily participation in online poker, online bingo, regular trips to the bookies and so on.

I honestly wish we had decent governments who could not be bought out and who would expose these gambling companies for the fraudsters they are. People need to know the truth.

I don't consider myself rich no, not at all. Nevertheless, having been fortunate enough to "see the light" of how the world operates and how media operates, I was able to stop myself from being repeatedly ripped off by greedy corporations. I retired from regular 9-5 work at age 48, mortgage paid off, no debts, no loans, no finance. You don't have to be rich to achieve this. You simply need to be "awake" and to live within your means and be frugal.

I've been caught out in life like everyone else. I dabbled in online poker before realising and understanding how it is controlled and rigged. 20 years ago I used to go to a casino once a week for a nice meal and a flutter. Gave that up when a roulette croupier showed me how they can spin a ball into a small arc of the wheel. Once you start to realise how far corruption reaches you begin to actively appraise everything in a different way if there is money is involved. Then you find they can't easily rip you off any more.

Gambling is as horrible as it is exciting. It's crooked and leads to misery for most people. Getting yourself free from the conveyor belt system that most of the population are on, is priceless. To do that you have to realise that you need to rid yourself of all debt and no more take out loans or other credit. Every penny you earn should go to paying down any existing debt as quickly as humanly possible, except that minimal money you need to live frugally.

People gamble regularly because they can't control their spending and debt acquisition vs their income, because they are bored and/or because they want to believe there is a "magic" way to suddenly come into a ton of money.

Everyone has a choice. You can live within your means or continually expend precious money on frivolous luxuries like iPhones, Sky TV, monthly film rentals, continual renewing of their cars and so on.

I can tell you from first hand experience that freedom is priceless. I don't have an iPhone, nor Sky TV, nor any monthly subscriptions. When I wake up in the morning I can get up when I want to and decide what I would like to do that day. All around me others are following the routine of getting up early, going to work, coming home, watching soaps, eating take-aways, going to bed and repeating it all over and over ad-infinitum. Families are bristling with iphones, iPads, iPods, Sky TV, expensive monthly subscriptions of all kinds. They renew their cars every 2-3 years losing £000s in the process every time. It's a drudgery that I used to know and hate. Gambling afforded a little excitement from time to time but ultimately just made the misery worse because you always lost significant amounts of money in the long run. Once you see how they rig everything gambling loses its interest tbh.

Re: Trying to turn £2 into £1000

I once had quite a heated argument with a colleague about this very subject, he spent far more in a year on his hobby than I did on mine. This was years ago now before the advent of the betting exchanges. I always keep records to see if there is a way to eliminate losers, so I always know whether I am winning or losing and for that year in question, 1995 I think, I lost £300 including expenditure on books, racing papers etc. He never did tell me how much his hobby cost him, he used to grow Alpine plants and travel all over the Country to shows with them.
