Maple Trees Perfumy?

I brought 2 lower branches of our maple tree in the house for our birds to play on. These have very young brand new leaves & once I got them in the house, noticed this very strong fragrance coming from them.

Now our neighbour's house we can't see it but we know if you go up to their house, its absolutely toxic from scents in their house.

This particular tree is about 70' from their house over a little hill. Could our tree have absorbed the cacophony of scented crap from their house or do maple trees coming into spring leaf smell that strongly. I sure hope its the latter & its natural.

Could it be the sap coming from the cut branches? or maybe you should go and sniff the tree.

To me it doesn't make sense to think a tree can absorb smells from a house 70' away. It's likely to be the smell from your branches themselves.
