York.
YORK
Many have left their footprints
in and around this lovely city.
Saxon; Viking; Roman;
scratch any surface
and her history bleeds out.
A rich panoply of cultures
and designs; the elegant facade
of Georgian town house
nestling beside Victorian
red brick solidarity;
angular Art Deco, nineteen
fifties frightfulness, and
the towering gothic cathedral
standing guardian over all.
There are other areas - dark,
sinister places where you
would not want to venture,
but even they hold
a strange kind of beauty.
The graffiti artists tags, the
eyeless windows of abandoned
shops, the skeletons of
derelict, unloved houses
and the rusted metal sculpture
of the burned out car.
All have something to
contribute to the living
history that is York and,
through it all, her twin rivers
Ouse and Foss meet, touch,
and flow timelessly onward.
