You have your opinions and I have mine.

I respect your opinions and hope you respect mine.

Neither of us is going to change our opinions, so I suggest we leave it at that.

I do respect your opinions JBR You're fine fellow generally but I just have trouble with your death wish towards cyclists.

I don't wish them to die; I said it wouldn't bother me if they died through their own arrogance. The same applies for motorists.

But let me also put forward another point of view.

Supposing the car driver was at fault this time, and not the cyclist.
Pretend the cyclist was knocked off his bike and was unconscious.
Then some sort of number plate or ID marked clearly on the bike, would certainly help the Police or Ambulance identify him/her much quicker, and so be able to let his family know.

I think it should be compulsory.
Unless the bike was nicked.

There is that aspect. Also, where could ID plates be fixed to? There's lots of room to fit readable plates to motor vehicles but only limited space to fit them to bicycles. They could be fixed to the handlebars at the front maybe but there's perhaps only the saddle width at the rear. If the one at the rear was too big, it could hinder getting on and off the bike. Too small and it wouldn't be readable from any distance.

More of a possibility might be to licence the cyclist who would wear a waistband with a number on it. I nearly always wear a high-vis belt when I'm on the bike and wouldn't mind an ID number being shown on that. It could be an answer ..that's if the licensing of cyclists were ever to come about, which during the rest of my cycling days seems unlikely.

Re: Licence plates for cyclists?

Had to smile today, a guy on a bike said to me "Something needs doing about them", about who? I replied, he pointed a some cars and a van, parked half on the road and half on the pavement, outside a sandwich shop, and said "it's dangerous obscuring your vision like that", I grumbled in agreement, then smiled as he cycled away along the pavement (not the road), folks, don't ya just love um.
