Legalized Con

Just purchased an item form Brisbane (Australia) on Ebay. The item cost was £73.21 and shipping £49.65 total £122.86 sterling, Today I got correspondence from Parcel Farce that I have to pay £25.88 VAT, and £12.00 clearance fee.
My gripe is this, by all means charge VAT on the products cost Ie £73.21 (£14.64) but not on the shipping cost 95% of the journey is taken outside UK airspace, what gives the exchequer any right on taxation of this, possibly and indication of what is due down the line?

Why did you assume that shipping costs are except from VAT in the first place? I would call this basic knowledge of trading conditions.
I am not a tax accountant but I know that Vat is due on the total amount not just the cost of the product.

Re: Legalized Con

Because the shipping costs are paid by the sender, and taxed in accordance with the senders government taxation policies???

I can't see anyone getting rid of VAT anytime soon. It would cause far too much disruption.

Re: Legalized Con

I guess it's seen as a transportation cost so an input. Part and package of what you are paying for but input after the production process perhaps?
But I think it's seen as providing a service on top of the item you purchase. Royal mail is exempt but of course that won't apply to international shipping. I usually go on CPD VAT update courses once a year, it's terribly complex plus the rules keep changing. Not part of my day to day but looks good on the CPD record... If I can bear to go on another of these courses I will ask for more details!

Re: Legalized Con

You can use many words to describe VAT (some rude) but simple is definitely not one of them! The value chain includes outbound logistics and the tax man is not going to exempt anything he can nail down fair and square as a juicy revenue-generating input.
