Barry, that is exceptionally kind of you.
But I need to learn so's I can do it the next time.

Thank you for your kindness though.

Stuff her then Don't suppose you know how to sharpen rotary lawnmower blades? Would do it myself, but am worried about getting it balanced so it doesn't shake too badly when in operation.

Having replaced the blades on an electric planer which I'd borrowed from a friend last year, only to have it explode with metal going everywhere (including through a fence pane about 6 feet away!!), I'm mightily reminded of just how powerful these power tools are and how glibly we tend to abuse their capabilities. Lord only knows how I avoided injury. (BTW, I did buy my friend a new planer - seemed obviously the right thing to do)

Technically correct but in practice rather difficult to do.

I have found that working on the 'angle' part of the blade often ends up with a mismatch at the point where the two parts meet and it's very difficult to get a consistent angle just by using a hand file of whatever type.

In the woodworking world most people only work on the flat side and leave the 'angled' blade alone and as people have said above, sometimes it's just the tension between the two blades that needs adjustment.

Eventualy, if you have a variety of tools to keep sharpe (from chisels and planes to secateurs and garden shears) you end up buying something like this:-

Re: Sharpening tools

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Hopefully all sorted now as I have got the file Judd recommended.
Just got to get to grips with using it properly now, and I'm away.
