Workhorse

Bought my current Workhorse in March 2018 with 103350 miles on the clock, this morning the odometer reading is 150879, so in two and a quarter years have covered 47529 miles (roughly 50/50 SDP and business). the car cost £800.00 when purchased and £1846.19 in maintenance/repair, total cost of vehicle (so far) £2446.19. This breaks down to £0.05p per mile and £2.82p per day.
£50.00 per 1000 miles seems very reasonable, especially as the minimum scrap value of the car is £200.00 so, depreciation is limited to £600.00 no matter what.
Does anyone else "Shoestring" motor?

Re: Workhorse

The risk of an older motor breaking down is too high and you don't know how it was treated/looked after before. So luckily always bought new or ex-demo in later life. When a lot younger did by second hand used, as that was all I could afford

Re: Workhorse

RS, there is always at least one new car in the family, I need a Workhorse, one of the delivery jobs I do involves the car only covering ten miles in a two and a quarter hour period, but I am in and out of the car around 70 times, and the car is running sort of continuously, but is switched on and off sometimes 30 times and, is susceptible to damage from the tight maneuvering involved, a half decent car would be wrecked in a couple of months, this one has amazed me, nearly 50,000 miles under these conditions.

With that mileage on the clock, I'm guessing it's a diesel? Buying brand new is a mug's game, best to buy 6-12 months old. The best thing about a workhorse is that you don't have to worry about every scratch and dent.

This makes sense. My latest car was an ex-demo, six-months-old and was £2000 less than a brand-new one.

Re: Workhorse

My car is a work tool, when I was office bound, got through 27 brand new cars, between 1990 and 1996. Now the remote office has gone, and the type of work has changed, beyond recognition. Now its cheap and cheerful, with a good service history.

Our cars are work horses too, my OH swears by his Land Rover, carts all sorts in it. Tools, Jacket, Boots, spare socks, Animal Feed, even sheep sometimes.

Re: Workhorse

Basic buying considerations for a Workhorse are, It must be a Ford Mondeo MK111, (the Mk1V is crap), maximum price £1000.00, maximum mileage 100,000, some service history, must have had Clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel replaced.

Re: Workhorse

when I paid £800.00 for the current workhorse, it came with a receipt for £820.00 from the previous month for the replacement of the Clutch and DMF.

Re: Workhorse

Workhorse developed a loud clonk yesterday when reversing and turning, the reason became clear about an hour later, the wife said has something fallen off the car, I felt something hit the underneath, so, I stopped the car, walked back and picked up the front nearside anti roll bar vertical link which had become independent of the ball joint at either end. I has only to do another 900 miles to make 50000 miles of service to me, a record for any workhorse, so, its in the garage today, being patched up.
