Yup. Been saying this for months in countless threads in this forum.

It's NOT just the sugar, people snack on all sorts of other crap too, BUT, it's the huge amounts of sugar in the first place that lead to the false hunger pangs that then make people snack.

Sugar is the equivalent of Crack Cocaine in food. It fools the brain's pleasure receptors to make you think what you're eating is great, tasty, a pleasurable experience and so manufacturers load their foods with it because it means people buy more of the product.

Addicting vulnerable and largely ignorant humans to sugar really does maximise profits for wicked companies. A sad world we live in.

Re: Why we are fatter today

eating seems to have become a 24hr habit

As other here have posted, growing up we got our meals and that was it, none of this grazing and fizzy drink all day malarkey

Having any food or drink outside of the house was a rare treat. Now and then mum would buy us a fizzy drink ( zing was the brand) at Woolworths whilst she stopped for a cuppa, but that really was a rare treat, probably in the Christmas run up and shops where heaving. Dad would sometimes treat us to a bag of crisps or nuts from the pub

Biscuits were a mid morning Sunday treat, not a daily fixture

And we walked everywhere, 3 miles to school and back again, two miles to the shops, 4 miles to the cinema, we walked everywhere. Housework took twice as long, you really did have a work out just doing a wash, hanging the mats over the line to beat clean, sweeping and mopping the Lino

Food was proper food. Meat, fish and veg. Yes we had suet puddings, bread and dripping and we cooked with lard, but everyone needed it because we worked it all off

Nowadays you only have to look at what people are putting in their trolly to know why they are obese. Everything prepared for them, even down to roast potatoes. Plus the choices are just mad. My Tesco has a whole aisle dedicated to crisps. another dedicated to chocolate and biscuits and another to fizzy drink, yet the fish is squeezed into a 3 ft section and the fresh meat is only half an aisle yet the prepared meals and processed meats have two aisles

Too many carbs and processed foods. `Low-fat` products that have been pumped full of sugar to compensate and too much fast food consumed. No coincidence that after the advent of MacDonald's, KFC and pizza parlours obesity levels have increased.

Re: Why we are fatter today

Overweight seems to be accepted as normal these days, as there are many overweight Models on TV and in magazines as well
All Stating we have to accept and be proud of our bodies.

It is true that many well-built people are also attractive, many of them are happily married too.

Children love cuddly people to snuggle into...and some men do as well!!

"Overweight" may be cuddly but it's a costly killer:
Nearly two-thirds of adults (63%) in England were classed as being overweight (a body mass index of over 25) or obese (a BMI of over 30) in 2015.

In England, the proportion who were categorised as obese increased from 13.2% of men in 1993 to 26.9% in 2015 and from 16.4% of women in 1993 to 26.8% in 2015. The rate of increase has slowed down since 2001, although the trend is still upwards.

It is estimated that obesity is responsible for more than 30,000 deaths each year. On average, obesity deprives an individual of an extra 9 years of life, preventing many individuals from reaching retirement age. In the future, obesity could overtake tobacco smoking as the biggest cause of preventable death.

Failing to address the challenge posed by the obesity epidemic will place an even greater burden on NHS resources. It is estimated that the NHS spent 6.1 billion on overweight and obesity-related ill-health in 2014 to 2015.

Annual spend on the treatment of obesity and diabetes is greater than the amount spent on the police, the fire service and the judicial system combined.
Not just alarming, but scary .....

If processed food isn't full of sugar it's full of fat instead. If not both.
