'Naff' originated in the gay slang 'Polari' (as made popular by 'Julian and Sandy' in the 60's BBC radio programme 'Round the Horne'). It originally meant 'not available for f***ing', ie 'straight' - and therefore boring.

And your country, the Netherlands, have banned all Referendums because?...........
Just like the UK we only had the advisory referendum. Those that were held caused a lot of confusion because the outcome was not decisive (around 50% for both alternatives) and the government didn't have to follow them (advisory). And they didn't follow the outcome.
A binding referendum was never introduced in the netherlands. We expect the government to govern, not to listen to every whim of a temporary majority. We believe in long term commitments.
