Make a Note on Your Calendar

Scientists believe that “There are lots of stars and gas clouds that could fall onto the hot disk around the black hole,” says Professor Bland-Hawthorn. “There’s a gas cloud called G2 that we think will fall in next year. It’s small, but we’re looking forward to the fireworks!”

The galaxy’s supermassive black hole (which is at the centre of our galaxy) has been known for decades. It’s orbited by a swarm of stars whose paths let us measure the black hole’s mass: four million times the mass of the Sun.

The region around the black hole, called Sagittarius A* [“A-star”], pours out radio waves, infrared, X-rays and gamma rays.

Interesting article.

I'm a wee bit tempted to buy a telescope!

Will you be having a look when the date is revealed?

I think I've mentioned it before on here, but there s a really good programme on TV at the moment called "How the Universe Works" - this week's programme was about black holes. I don't know how some of these astronomers keep any sense of proportion about everyday life when they are dealing with/thinking about such huge events and massive timescales. I think I'd be tempted to just sit there blankly going "Wow!"

Doesn't the UK have observatories you could go to? I know I shall be asking ours if we can have a quick look

Yes, I agree with that. Wouldn't it just put things into perspective.

Re: Make a Note on Your Calendar

Just reminded me of a card I got today .....
Picture of 2 eskimos laying down in the snow - one says 'What do all those stars in the sky mean to you Eric ?'
'They mean - someones nicked our igloo !' ....
