Re: Did anyone on here suffer the violence that Teachers dished out decades ago??

I had the cane a few times during my school life. Nothing serious, six strokes of the cane on the bum was the most serious, easy to forget.

My complaint about the teachers I had is that with a couple of exceptions they just weren't very good and certainly not inspiring (perhaps I wasn't a very attentive student). One maths teacher at my grammar shouldn't have been allowed in the place he had no control, taught absolutely nothing and (I think with hindsight) was suffering from shell shock.

in all jobs there are people that inspire and those that demotivate it seems (most being somewhere in the middle) - it made such a difference when you were fortunate to get a good teacher didn't it.

Yes, there were also some great teachers. I loved Miss Wauchop

Except that within the rules, laws and expectations of the times, those teachers would probably have been judged not to have done anything wrong. Unfortunately we can't apply today's laws to yesteryear.

Today's laws may be different, but yesteryear's laws were wrong, letting teachers get away with physical abuse. God help us if they were still able to get away with it today. They wouldn't dare. I wonder why

Of course yesteryear's laws were wrong - my point was in these cases pursuing the teachers in their old age would have been pointless anyway as they didn't break the laws at the time. Quite a lot of parents in those days ruled with the rod too. What the likes of Glitter and Harris et al did was against the law at the time the acts were committed which is why they could be prosecuted.

Of course teachers wouldn't dare do the same now - partly because it is illegal, but mostly because they wouldn't want to, not being sadists. Remember, not all teachers did it then.
