It's good playing around with shapes and filters. I spend time doing that too. I don't always know what to do with the results having discovered them them but it's something learned and so is interesting ..and it will maybe come in useful for something when the time comes.
About filters, I don't know if you'd be interested in this aspect of making images...
You don't always have to do all effects in the same program. Save the image made in Xara as a jpeg, then take it into any photo program and apply the filters included with that. 'Painnt' is a pure filter program that can produce hundreds of effects. For instance, this effect applied to your image...
After that, you could even take the image back into Xara and add your text or other object to it. Endless fun and possibilities.
