We used to have a reasonably compassionate system some thought too generous, now we have people killing themselves because they see no hope or money or food. As for EU, I noted "no causal relation". But there is a clear correlation. You may reason that due to being part of the EU your general prosperity increased, reflected in decreasing suicide.
