I repeat - whats wrong with that

What's wrong Pat darlin' is that those lessons were COMPULSORY - we weren't given any options. I would also liked to have withdrawn from P.E. too as yet again I have no interest whatsoever in any sports. I consider that up to one third of my schooling was a complete waste of my time!!!

I didn't like school either - more to do with 'teachers' than anything...
Anyway Joe - a lot of children are without fathers to teach them skills these days, theres also the break up of 'family life'... So schools should play an active part - if you dont agree - thats fine...

Re: Margret Thatcher

So now there are many future Uncle Joe's not taking part in PE because they have no interest in keeping fit or taking any exercise. Instead they become obese they have not learned what it is like to take part in team games and win as a team that is what sport teaches.

Have a look around you UJ you will see that children are becoming obese, unhealthy and unable to know the joy of just being children. They are driven to school, picked up from school and opt out of games. Instead they eat junk, takeaways, sugary snack, salty greasy crisps. I am sure they will look back and see their childhood as a complete waste of time.

What children have not been taught is economics, how to budget, how to make a pound stretch, how to make a meal stretch into four portions instead of two. Young poorer kids are having kids and are then unable to pass on any skills because they haven't got any to pass on.

Cookery classes only lasted about ninety minutes and you learned what? How to make a Victoria sponge maybe or a nice tinned apple crumble. Come on most of us learned our homemaking skills from our parents, even if they didn't realise we were learning it was a case of monkey see monkey do.

Of course Pat is right there are not many two parent families about but worse there are not many extended families that is grandparents, aunts and uncles people who you also could learn from.

Re: Margret Thatcher

Glad we agree Pat, I certainly didn't like school, and the Friday afternoon cookery lesson was not the place I learned to cook. I found cooking much later in life and it is now my hobby and friend.

My two sons a brilliant cooks much better than me and my daughter is very adventurous with her cooking again beats me hands down. However, I like to think it was me planted the seeds to cook, looking at cookery books with them and trying things out when they were very young.

Re: Margret Thatcher

On Mondays there are about 30 oldies exercising to keep fit, in the class I volunteer to run.
In fact I help in 3 classes a week.
And I can assure there are a lot of youngsters go to the sports centre.
But even in this day and age there are many getting free school meals.
