You might think a pencil is a simple item?

Re: The Humble Pencil

That's a brilliant link! How the pencil has progressed over the years! I remember my Mum buying me an HB pencil and I thought I was great taking it into the class next day - and, it had a rubber end on it

Thanks for sharing that link

Re: The Humble Pencil

I had trouble with the link..but what I saw was clever. I always loved to draw and so did my dad, I used to pinch his soft pencils for shading..I'm sure he knew
I remember pencils that you dampened (mostly with your tongue ) to get a bold outline..bit like watercolour pencils now.

Re: The Humble Pencil

It was an amazing story.

I will check our archives for some additional pictures where the pencil is used for something other than its usual function.

Re: The Humble Pencil

Marvellous pieces of carving.

I once read about a prisoner who could carve using only a rice grain.
This is where I begin to doubt the veracity of the story because upon release he was commisioned to carve "THE LAST SUPPER" out of a single rice grain. This took him some months and upon completion the grain of rice carved to represent the last supper was delivered. It later changed hands at over a million pounds and was eventually stolen.

You couldnt make it up!
