Re: Chinese Lanterns

So sad that they should have to be banned, after all the bad press you would think that common sense would tell people not to use them. Oh dear, I just said 'common sense' ..... obviously somebody doesn't have any.

Re: Chinese Lanterns

I agree the lanterns need banning along with fireworks.
But I can't understand how they knew it was a Chinese lantern, did someone see it?

Re: Chinese Lanterns

Probably someone saw it heading for the area or they found remains, I doubt they would announce it if they didn't know.

Apparently it was caught on CCTV as it landed on the plastic dump.

Re: Chinese Lanterns

The lanterns have always been an accident waiting to happen,
they are not a good idea and need to go.

Re: Chinese Lanterns

The first time I saw one of those lanterns I thought I saw a UFO flying across the sky
Didn't realise how fast and high they could go.

Re: Chinese Lanterns

On Health & Safety grounds they should be banned and legislation introduced to stop people selling them. Our emergency services have stated that they are a hazard and sooner or later lives could be put at risk with what is essentially a naked flame.

Re: Chinese Lanterns

Right let me disagree! Every time an incident happens - no matter how rare, people are up in arms screaming "Ban them".

Consider the number of people killed or injured every year by accidental causes from pile ups on motorways to being thrown off a horse. Consider the number of fires started by disgarded cigarettes or faulty electrical appliances. Do you want to ban everything?

As for 'Chinese lanterns', if you can't buy them, you can easily make them - the scouts & cubs used to do this years ago using a light plastic 'laundry bag' with a cotton wool ball and meths for fuel.

Re: Chinese Lanterns

George matey, these chinese lanterns are a hazard to air navigation too. There is a local airport (Shoreham) close to me, which is used by both 'light' aircraft and helicopters. These lanterns can get so high that they can interfere with the aircraft.
