Designer Dogs

I've recently upset someone over their dog. I met this woman while I was walking my dog and she had a small, brownish, very fluffy young dog on a lead. It was very friendly and I think still a puppy.

I asked her what breed it was as I didn't recognise it. She said it was a Cavapoochon So...a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a Poodle and a Bichon.

Without thinking I said "Oh, a Heinz 57 then" to which she replied "No, it's a proper dog breed and it cost me a fortune".

Apparently she paid over a grand for this dog and didn't appreciate me calling it a mongrel, but isn't that what it is?

Is it just me or have people got more money than sense these days, everybody seems to be getting these designer dogs and they're damned expensive.

Think I'll just stick to my Lab

Daft isn't it ?
My first dog was a borador ( lab cross collie ) the owners were only too glad to give me him for free.
Now to purchase such a cross you are looking at £400-£600 .
I have a border collie now a rescue dog and he's fantastic .

Re: Designer Dogs

You are right Nichol, a mixed breed so a mongrel by any other name, same as our cockerpoos are. Rather pretentious to try and call them a breed, although I guess in reality all dogs other than wolves have been cross bred to form whatever we call them now....

Re: Designer Dogs

We have always had rescue dogs and our latest is gorgeous and a good old Mongrel whom we took on when we were in Spain. She is really beautiful and people are always asking us what she is and when I say she's a mongrel they go quiet.

Its nothing to do with money as we always donate a really good sum of money to the rescue centre for us its taking on an unwanted dog and giving them a good home. I actually get quite cross on all these now called Crossbreeds that people are willing to pay loads for but won't consider rescues.

Re: Designer Dogs

Cockerpoos, Labradoodles and Goldendoodles I can sort of understand. The logic being the poodle bit stops or at least lessens the moulting, so would be good for people with allergies.

It's these silly crosses that cost silly money that stumps me.

A few years ago I knew a woman who had a Sprollie. That's a cross between a Springer Spaniel and a Border Collie. 2 of the most "lively" (I want to use the word manic but don't want to upset anyone ) breeds you can get. Why would you even think about cross breeding them? This woman got her dog from rescue where it had been sent at the age of 6 months by the original owners who had bought it as a designer dog from Harrods And the original owners just couldn't cope with it.

When I knew this dog it was around 8 or 9 and was still as mad as a box of frogs. Is it just a money making thing?

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against mongrels, I think they are stronger and more resilient than any pedigree or designer dog. I wanted one when I got my last dog but all the rescue places here had was Staffie crosses, Lurchers and JRT crosses, none of which I'm confident with.

Hi Nicol, I know where you are coming from in that lots of rescues are full of Staffies, but they can make wonderful pets. What I'd say is take your time and look around at numerous Rescue Centres.

Re: Designer Dogs

I feel really sad that lots of people think rescue dogs are a no no in that they are vicious etc. Having had five rescues so far they have all been wonderful and enriched our lives. Yes they have had their problems which we've worked with but in time, love and patience and being fully socialised they ended up coming everywhere with us and have been really proud at all the comments we've had on how well behaved lovely dogs they are.

What would you call a Bulldog crossed with a Shih Tzu?
