There are other meanings too, another is an implement used to land or bring a caught fish into a boat. Many also refer to the slang term 'gaff', not in common use nowadays though. The links below give some explanations:

That's brilliant Baz, no Sunday night was complete in our house without 'Last of the Summer Wine'.....

Most of the terraced houses have been knocked down now Baz, and the ones that remain are mostly occupied by Asians and Eastern Europeans.
They don't care about a nicely scrubbed step....

Strange looking back on that series though isn't it.

they really must wonder what life was all about in those days!

It is an expensive place to live and the terraces are still there.
