I didn't have an option.
Apart from the fact my mum would remove my balls for even suggesting she use an engine hoist there's H&S to contend with.

The care company cannot allow there employee's to use anything other than apparatus fit for purpose nor anything 'used' unless accompanied by an 'apparatus checked and passed' certificate.

Sometimes your need to find fault distorts rational thinking.

Very good post Tpin, and I agree with you.

Unfortunately some things are out of our hands.
You are right about care companies too. They will not risk their staff being injured or their clients suffering injury through having to use someone's attempt at home-made equipment.
If you were looking after your family with it yourself, with no outside care, it might be ok, but once you involve professional care companies, they would expect proper recognised equipment.

I will have a look in future, thanks.
You are very welcome, the thing about a lot of disabled items is, I'm afraid to say, they have not been used for a long time and are now surplus to requirements having been used for only a short period.

Thanks Mups.

There is always a plus....I could rent it by the day as an engine hoist

You have to be careful if things are not absolutely right they will not let her come home, now isn't the time for second hand etc much as it pains me to say so.

Re: Fed up with being ripped off for 'disabled' devices.

H and S, yea right. When my wife started to have falls, she could not get up on her own and without help from other people I could not do so.
At home when she had a fall, I made an aid. Now don't laugh. I had a block and tackle (for engine removals) and a step ladder. The B&T was attached to the top of the ladder. I made a 'bosom chair' out of thick ply. She would wiggle her bum onto the 'chair' and hey ho up she would go, until she could stand.
Later I found a Mangar airflow on eBay. This is what the ambulance carry for lifting people.
It has been used a few times, and worth the few quid that I paid for it.

Anyway I have a right to moan.
The difference in price is about 200 pints of beer.
200 pints lost is a very good reason to moan and even more. Your indignation is well founded and totally justified when measured in pints of ale not drunk.

My stairlift cost me £1500, it was virtually new the person it was originally for died just months after buying it new,
I even had Acorn come and change a part, that had been recalled.

Terrible. I was going to buy a recliner chair ,but the cost was over £1,000, which I just cant afford.Couldnt your Mum get help from Social Services ? Although saying that our S.S are not good. I had someone come to see me recently, they offered me a commode & a bed rail to help get in/out of bed , niether which I need, but a stairlift, no way[ we like people to manage as long as they can !!] A 3 wheeled walker ? Dont do those , you can have a walking frame to help aroud the house

Re: Fed up with being ripped off for 'disabled' devices.

I'm not wealthy or even well off but the money isn't the problem.
I just don't like being ripped off or those that need specialist equipment.

I think it's disgraceful trading/business ethics.
