Motor cycling seems to be a bit out of character for a man who
from his own admission is risk averse, ergo, precautions over
covid?
I ask these questions as a once upon a time biker ??

Donkeyman! 👍😁😁👍👍
It would be better if you started a new thread on motorbikes Donkey man, it is way off topic for the Politics and Govt thread.

A rather Julie Andrews type simplistic view.
There was always going to be job losses ... you don't tell 10 million people to stay at home and not work and not expect to have a very very expensive day of reckoning.

It was over generous .... it's now going on too long and looking at how many people are complaining they're getting stranded in foreign countries whilst on holiday ... they aren't taking it all too seriously at all.

You are right there Morti, it was well meant, but over generous?

Hopefully played the Organ.

Furlough, being discussed by predominately retired folks seems silly.

i wouldn't call Julie Andrews simple minded In fact she has played mainly down to earth sensible roles with plenty of common sense.

The Government had a choice. Do nothing and watch the whole pandemic lockdown crumble into downright anarchy and revolt, or the alternative which was possible because we have a strong economy that can take the debt. People robbing each others houses during a pandemic or starving on the street would not have done the economy or country much good. The property market crashing would have been a good move? I don't think so. It would have been a right mess had they done nothing.

I do think it's been abused by some and that adequate controls were not in place, but it was an emergency measure so that was bound to happen. However, they do need to go back and check whether funds were appropriately apportioned and perhaps those who can should pay back over time? I did think some of these payments to companies were loans.

The economy is like a goldfish bowl. People who think this should not have been done do not seem to understand how adversely they would be personally affected had it not taken place.

Re: Coronoavirus: Furlough Wind Down Starts

A strong economy? Err, we don't. We have a VERY fragile economy underwritten by the finance sector that supports our invisible exports that even before the Chinese Plague struck was insufficient to balance our government current account.

One probable outcome of all this is a huge reworking of the Social Services aka "Benefits" provision paid for by tax payers that Socialist governments have used to achieve redistribution of earnings. That will be a GOOD thing and long past being due.

Most wealthy nations have a large national debt to sweat their capital. How else do you grow?

Export more than is imported and have a population that overall live within their means. In addition only invest in what returns a profit. Can be done and actually is done in the case of some countries.

A very old fashioned view. Our societies are far more sophisticated. Intangibles have great value in the modern world.
