Stupid ain't it??
Perhaps I'm being a bit thick, but wouldn't it be easier to catch fewer fish? It would not only save the loss of fish, but would also be easier! Use smaller nets if necessary.

Banning supertrawlers, redistributing and reducing the TAC limits and shortening the fishing season / number if days at sea would be my way if doing it.
Haven't we just bought four new patrol vessels for that purpose?
I believe we also have monitoring resources like radar and satellite surveillance.

If all our fishing vessels were checked when landing their catch, they wouldn't do it.

There are always ways and means.
The only real limiting factor is our government's interest and will to do it.

Exactly JBR if we redistributed the tooneage and species tac limits from the supertrawlers, reduced them and handed them to the smaller boats with a reduced number of days at sea it would solve most issues.

A land everything you catch policy with on board CCTV for all boats would be ideal but asking a bit too much at the moment

Not thick JBR, obtuse!
I was speaking tongue in cheek!
CFP rules give certain boats licences to catch certain species of fish.
As it's not possible to catch only the species you want with a net,
It leads to a lot of unlicenced fish being brought on board the boat
which will cause the boat owner to pay a fine for if they are landed?
Ergo the dumping?
The whole system is stupid !!

I think you are right Bread, but l think super trawlers should be
banned from ANY territorial waters world wide?
There are untold areas of ocean more than 200 MLS from land all
around the globe, let them fish there !!
It's not essential that they fish close to land surely?
I will bet that any restrictions on them will cause a lot of shyte though

Ah, I see.
So I was being a bit thick after all.
I assumed that a licence would permit only a certain amount of fish regardless of species.
I can see the problem, then, of trying to catch only the species you want to catch.

Perhaps all catches, when unloaded at the harbour could be accounted for and paid for by the company that processes them. They could then sell on each specie to the appropriate buyer. I don't know how difficult that would be, but I assume at least possible and would avoid wastage.

Exactly right JBR.

Another way to fck em up is to build more off shore wind farms to prevent the larger vessels coming in land. They also make great conservation zones ... I know starfish migrate to the power lines under the sea. There are millions of them that end up lining the sea bed along the power lines from the wind farms to the coast.
