None. I start from the middle and draw 4 radials outwards, following a random procedure as to which arm to draw next.

Does this mean that I'm inclined to sit there wondering who actually pays people to make up this sort of nonsense?

No. 5, although the written description contradicts the diagram!

Top left to bottom right, then bottom left to top right.

As I don't follow the written description, it must mean that I refuse to follow rules when I disagree with them.

Hmm. The centre of the cross is the box, and all of the radials are drawn away from it.
