right unit wrong fitting

I don't know why this was where the cupboards I took down was placed, but typically another shoddey job done.

This is a metal fitting which should have had a metal backbox, but no it was fitted" almost" to a plastic backbox. He had heavy industrial woodwork equipment so I suppose this was to be a safety device incase he overloaded the circuit

Don't want it anyway as the main house circuit breakers do the job anyway.
I had a spare double socket so used that as a replacement

What was plugged into it that required RCD protection?

Re: right unit wrong fitting

I guess the industrial woodworking equipment the previous owner used

Top left on an angle is what looks like a fused unit. good reason for it being like that. I had to cut with a sabre saw MDF boarding around it to get to the partition wall. There are so many cables behind it it was impossible to pull it out let alone not being long enough
Below is the light switch and then to the right the double socket I used.

No I have plenty of space for the 6ftx3ftx2ft racking I have ordered with a wider access to the garage

my little worshop

You'd have though that for the sake of a couple of quid he'd have used an appropriate pattress.

Would the plastic box have mattered?

Straight question ... would using a metal backbox have anything to do with additional earth leak protection?

short answer is no it is just the right fitting for that bit of kit.

Little story for you about earthing

Many years ago when I worked folr BT I was supposed to install a small switchboad in Leatherhead bus garage.
How I was supposed to run cables across a high garage with inspection pit for buses I don't know. with buses coming in and out all the time

The very first thing before anything else was to check any premises to see they had a good earth. Leatherhead bus gagage had no electrical earth at all.

Instantly I threw the job back and refused to do the installation as the switchboard required an electrical earth as part of the system

Was I glad not to get that job or not? you bet is was

It would still be sound whether it was a metal box or a plastic box. Or either.
