Brussels opposes UK entry to the Lugano Convention legal pact

Brussels is pushing for the UK to not be able to join the Lugano Convention, an international legal pact, after officials held a crunch meeting yesterday.

The EU is reportedly against allowing the UK to join the convention on the grounds that it is not a member of the European Economic Area or the European Free Trade Association.

The final decision will be taken collectively by EU nations in the coming weeks, with all countries needing to unanimously approve an application.

Brussels’ push to oppose the UK’s entry to the Lugano Convention is out of step with the wishes of several EU countries, the*Financial Times*reports.

The government certainly wants it as they have applied to join but they forget they chose to be free of all EU legal frameworks.

It seems that membership is possibly restricted to EU and EFTA countries as Lichtenstein is not a member.
Seems we will have to do as the rest of the world does now we are a third country

Swimmy is right but you should maybe remember that these things work both ways.

Hi

Speaking as an ex Enforcement Officer I have views on this.

It is very sad that leaving will cut the UK off from the EU Databases.

That is definitely a downside.

The upside is we can be more pragmatic about some rules.

Two very dangerous terrorists got away because Belgium prohibits raiding Private Accommodation before 5 am.

Sod that for a game of marbles.

The EU also has stupid rules on Personal Privacy which prevents or causes problems with effective proactive Enforcement.

This is the stupid stuff, it allows Terrorists to carry out huge attacks like Paris and Manchester because we cannot infringe their right to privacy.

Sod that for a game of marbles, down they go to protect the innocent.

I have very simple views on this.

Protections are there to protect ordinary people who are not plotting mass murder.

They are not there to protect Terrorists.

A blunt Northerner, the taxpayer paid me a very good wage to protect the innocents.

They did not pay me to pick up pieces of dead kids and women.

They paid me not to let this happen.

Yes I am a Dinosaur, I am not very PC.

I am glad I am out of it, but also proud to have a trained a few to put protection first.

I haven't researched it yet, maybe you can provide the reasons the EU opposes UKs membership?

Anyway I could think that it is a wise decision of the EU commission because it could prevent B. Johnson to sign another "great" deal which later turns not to be that great. And it would tie the UK together with something EU related which has to be prevented at any cost (as we know from these forums).

So this opposition could be to protect the UKs citizens.

Your examples are very important upsides IMHO.

It means that they can bugger/sod/f*** off. More politely, they can get lost.
