"One commentator" eh?

Well what's new?
We're used to that by now.
It was the same with TV crews waiting anxiously at Dover in the new year, in vain.

Here's an interesting take on things from The Telegraph:

The French people are Britain's best ally – they can't stand Macron either

"Boris Johnson should ignore the provocations, recall the gunboats - and gamble on the slow demise of the Macron presidency"

"On one level the threats are risible. An electricity cut-off would cause inconvenience for Jersey but Britain could counter any broader power blockade by switching to liquefied natural gas from Qatar or the US, or switch to coal in extremis."

"The picture will look very different by 2030 in any case as the UK rolls out its vast expansion of offshore wind and moves towards net self-sufficiency in power. Flows will be going the other way. If obstructed, excess UK renewable electricity could be used instead to make lucrative green ammonia for the global market."

The report goes on to discuss the damage such French actions risk doing to other UK/France relationships such as with defence and security and then points out the numerous and very real problems Macron has at home in France, where (be honest) he is unlikely to get re-elected.
The report finishes with this accurate surmise:

"The British quarrel is not with France: it is with Emmanuel Macron. His method of government to play the nationalist card and to pick fights with the British wherever possible. He is doing so because his presidency is cracking and his inner team thinks the rosbifs are an easy target."

"The French do not take his posturing entirely seriously. Nor should we. Let us look forward to another Entente Cordiale once we have both seen the back of him."

Yes I know it's from The Telegraph which is subscription-only. If you don't wish to take up the free trial subscription and still can't read that report you will either have to be satisfied with what excerpts I've posted or look for what may well turn out to be less-reputable sources of a similar report.

I think I might have mentioned in a completely different thread that we were once developing one using our Bloodhound anti-aircraft missiles but, like so many things, that was cancelled by our politicians!

What we DO have (and the Frogs don't!) is a ballistic missile early warning radar system at Fylingdales, which would give us several minutes' warning of any heading our way and give us time to launch a retaliatory strike.

In addition to our Trident nuclear missiles, we certainly have many more nuclear warheads which are not mounted on ballistic missiles. They don't say so, but presumably these would be carried by aircraft. What else would we do with them?!

Jeez that's a bit of a dangerous question to ask innit JBR?...Only kidding. Just a bit of crude antipodean humour..For Art's sake..

Hi

Unfortunately most of our infrastructure is controlled by the techie stuff, whether we like it or not.

No cash in the cash points, debit and credit cards not working.

No water or electricity and gas will run out in a few days and take weeks to be got back into use.

The petrol and diesel will run out, the pumps will not work.

The only fuel will be the protected supplies for the military and other agencies.

That is modern warfare and it will hurt.

Yes l understand that Swimmy, but petrol pumps can be easily
converted back from digital to manual operation,( like they used to
be) And l don't believe powerstations etc can be controlled from
an external source ??
Why would they need to be ??
The controls are self contained within the generation faculty surely?
although those controls may well be computerised nowdays !!
On the money machines there maybe a problem initially but we
would soon revert to real money again ??
Imo there is a good case for doing away with all this electronic
money for the very reasons that you quote, such as giving the
the powers that be too much power over the populace and WILL
lead to coercion by the government eventually ??

That doesn't include the BBC reporters huddled aboard the French fishing boats - talk about taking the EU's side.
