I've sent the two photos to the met office in Cambridge so we'll see what they come up with.

I've had a reply from the met office and they consider it to be a vapour trail from an aircraft (except they called it a "condensation trail")

I think it's a vapour trail too, sometimes near sunset they get lit up by the sun at a low angle in the sky. Put it this way, I hope it is!
