The word ephemera comes from the Greek word ephēmeros, which means “'lasting only a day.” Although not originally intended to be collected as art objects, some ephemera is preserved and collected for its artistic merit or historic interest.

Sad isn't it.

Depends on how you hold your mouth. Me? I'd just say "Ker-ap" and have done with or as they say in Wales "Drek".

Re: Pronunciations (again)

While we are talking about pronunciations, why do people from oop North describe a pool as a poo-wel?

I pronounce those the same way as well. I have an Oxford Talking Dictionary CD lurking in a drawer somewhere. I must dig it out.

It's the reason that Perrier and Evian water is so popular oop there.

Re: Pronunciations (again)

I know what you mean, Rhian.

I was once giving an ad hoc history lesson about the Spanish Armada, when one of the little brats noticed the name of a town on the north coast of France - Gravelines.

I hadn't planned to mention it, in fact I hadn't honestly noticed it until the brat pointed it out.

All I could do was to say, "Well, that looks like 'Grave-lines', doesn't it, though I'm sure it isn't pronounced that way". Then I stuck my neck out and suggested that, "I think it might actually be pronounced 'Gra-va-leen'".

I never thought about it again until just now, so I'm still not sure how it really should be pronounced.

Perhaps a better person than I, on here might advise me!
