A new trade deal in the making

Britain’s high commissioner in*Australia*has been forced onto national TV Down Under to try to smooth over a row over bizarre comments about a possible trade deal which have been branded “sledging” in Canberra.

The embarrassing development was privately described by one Australian government minister of “counter-productive” to International Trade Secretary*Liz Truss’s hopes of striking a deal to partially make up for the UK’s loss of trade opportunities due to*Brexit.

She moaned that the going was too slow. The negotiations have been going on for some months. Doesn't she know a real trade deal takes years?
Untill now she has closed only roll over deals, so what does she know?

So what?

We have left the EU, we are doing things differently.

It is not your problem.

Differently?

“She plans to sit him down in the Locarno Room [in the Foreign Office] in an uncomfortable chair, so he has to deal with her directly for nine hours,” said the source.

Yeah, that is how you treat your former colonies.

Where?
No supporting link Solly?
Didn't you know that a joint statement has been released?

" Joint Statement on UK-Australia trade talks

The UK and Australia have today (Friday 23 April) reached consensus on the vast majority of elements of a comprehensive free trade agreement."

You haven't bothered to read it, have you?
The main bits are agreed.
Now it's crossing the t's and dotting the i's.
The final details.

But at least you understand what a joint statement is at last.
Woo-hoo!

Re: A new trade deal in the making

Looking on at this thread is interesting. The "I'll sit him in a room for 9 hours" thing sounds like a joke to me. I sure hope it is. She couldn't be serious. Australia has nothing but good will towards the UK in terms of trade. And Australia will accept absolutely nothing less in return. My impression is we are happy to trade with anybody; the UK..the EU - and that includes China -if the negotiations are fair and both have a win/ win objective. If they don't well, looking back over my notes on the principles of effective negotiation, they are not negotiation at all. The argy bargy that is going on between the UK and the EU is the business of both of you. Not us. But the zeitgeist in Australia is that we have no time for mind games. You deal with us on a fair playing field. Or?..play with a straight bat if the UK vernacular suits you, or forget it. We have enough crap and bullying from China to deal with in respect to trade at the moment without opening up a new front in Europe. China is trying to strangle our economy right now. No denial that their actions are hurting but in the big picture they are failing. All they are succeeding in doing is making themselves look like prize prats. As far as the rest of the world goes, We just want successful and mutually beneficial trade arrangements. Anything else is a waste of time.

Re: A new trade deal in the making

According to the ABC trade minister Dan Tehan has departed Britain promising an in-principle trade deal with the United Kingdom by June.

If the negotiations are conducted at such a pace, an Australia-UK free trade deal will likely be the first major agreement struck by Britain since it cleaved from the European Union, offering Boris Johnson a political, if not economic windfall.

Mr Tehan declined to nominate the deal's potential financial value, but the British government's own analysis has forecast it may result in an increase in GDP for the UK of as little as 0.02 per cent.

It's expected the upside for Australia would be considerably greater, with Australian beef and lamb producers hoping for significantly increased access to the UK market.

I notice in that report that the mob that gave the world mad cow disease are lobbying the British government to demand all Australian meat imports meet the high environmental and animal welfare standards imposed on local products. What a joke!
