Replacement exhaust

I have a 207 Peugeot SW and the MOT shows the bracket holding the exhaust needs welding. When I took the car to the garage, I was told the exhaust is fine at the moment, but when it needs replacing, the whole unit must be replaced, which is apparently hugely expensive.

How do I find out the part details for my car; and how do I find the cost? For the moment, I'd just like to check out what I'm being told.

exhaust system complete

https://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/P...RoC-bYQAvD_BwE

or here

https://www.ebay.co.uk/b/Complete-Ex.../bn_7012797291

that is just parts not including fitting costs

all depends on quality of the metal used to make the exhaust.

Always best to replace the whole lot, putting new section to old is not a good idea generally. It would not be long before you are back having the old replaced as well and that would mean extra fitting charges

There might be a price different if it is a diesel or petrol car you don't say. Also it depends if you go to a main dealer or another non franchised garage

Re: Replacement exhaust

Thanks very much for that. I searched the online automotive giving my registration number and strangely was given a few options of various bits of exhaust (which doesn't tie-up with what I've told) or a complete exhaust system which is around £240 - not as bad as I thought! The ebay link gives loads of different options. Next time I go to the garage, I'll ask the man to check for me and see what he says............it's the first time I've had a scare tactic comment from this garage.

No it wasn't. Just the garage I've used for servicing for nearly ten years and who have been absolutely wonderful todate, which is why I found the comment about the exhaust surprising.

I'll ask them for a price when I next go in.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Replacement exhaust

I learned years ago to never change the exhaust system myself. I bought one from a spares store and spent a day with the car up on ramps while I cursed and swore fitting the damn thing. Crawling about in a confined space undoing rusted nuts and fittings then manoeuvring the new bits into place was not fun.

For an extra $10 a local specialist exhaust shop would have built and fitted a new exhaust system in an hour.

Never made that mistake again.

Yes, I've done the same myself! To save ever having to do it again the next time it needed replacing I purchased a stainless steel exhaust system. It was a twin exhaust from manifold to tail pipes, had it fitted and that was the end of the problem. Expensive initially but some 30 years' on it's still OK. The car is not used as much these days but remains without any problems.

Re: Replacement exhaust

My car was registered in October 2008 and I've had it since February 2009 - certainly hoping it will last a lot lot longer, but I leave the mechanics to the garage.

You mean cars? Mechanics? Or exhausts?
