It's not True! Is it?

'The way to a man's heart is his through stomach'

The fact is that many men are married or have partners who can't or won't cook.

They must be very good at something else!!

WAY TO A MAN'S HEART IS THROUGH HIS STOMACH, THE - "The evolution of this saying appears to be almost as indirect as the route to a man's heart. The American statesman John Adams wrote in a letter , 'The shortest road to men's hearts is down their throats,' and some years later Richard Ford's 'A Handbook for Travellers in Spain' advised, 'The way to many an honest heart lies through the belly.' A few years later, Miss Mulock observed in 'John Halifax, Gentleman' that the stomach was the way to an Englishman's heart. Fifteen years after that, the writer Fanny Fern broadened the idea to include all men in 'Willis Parton' (c. 1872), rendering the saying in its current form." From "Wise Words and Wives' Tales: The Origins, Meanings and Time-Honored Wisdom of Proverbs and Folk Sayings Olde and New" by Stuart Flexner and Doris Flexner (Avon Books, New York, 1993).

Re: It's not True! Is it?

I certainly do the cooking in our house.

I have a wide repertoire but concentrate on feeding myself and wifey with plenty of good fresh vegetables every day and fresh fruit.

Tomorrow I'll be cooking Sole Meuniere with new potatoes, french beans and broccoli and a bit of fennel.

Other days of the week it's a range of well sourced meats or fish from a very reputable farm shop.

Rib Eye steaks
Fillet Steaks
Chicken breasts marinaded in lemon juice, garlic, turmeric and paprika
Pork loin steaks
Gammon steaks

or Hake, Sea Bass, Mackerel, Halibut, Scallops
usually pan fried and done either with lemon butter or some tasty chorizo

Then occasionally I will throw in a good bowl of Chilli
or a good Shepherd's Pie or Cottage Pie

and so on

Come winter I'll move to the slow cooker with lovely stews and other winter dishes

Shin beef stew with dumplings
Moroccan lamb or mutton stew
Chicken thighs with chopped lemons, garlic, white wine etc
Butternut squash with onions, ginger, cinnamon and cumin

Most Sundays I cook a traditional roast lamb joint with roast tatties and veg.

Honestly the old cliche of the woman cooks in the house is really ancient history.

Men are extremely capable.

We cook
We can stack the dishwasher
We can operate the washing machine
We can wash and change the bedding
Mow the lawn of course

and so on

I think people are generally more independent these days even in the context of marriage.

Did you train as a Chef?

It is true, some men can cook.

All the men in my family cook, even Grandsons
We never ate convenience or junk food at home
So they learned by example.

I let my children help with cooking from the age of six years old.
