From what I read Australia and New Zealand, both islands, managed to lock everything down, unlike the UK. We are a small island so it should have been even easier but it didn't happen. At the start of the pandemic I read somewhere that some 20,000 people arrived in the UK after travelling by air from countries where coronavirus was really bad!

As a result of failures like that we have what we have now, appalling total figures for fatalities and those contracting the coronavirus. Not forgetting of course all the problems the two lockdowns we have gone through have caused in the population, a lot of this has yet to be fully realised.

We are still shut down only returning residents enter the country and only people with permits leave.

All covid outbreaks have come from Hotel Quarantine because the useless Federal Government has had a year to build Howards Springs like quarantine centres but has done absolutely nothing. they have totally botched the vaccine roll out too. Thank goodness for the State Geovernments.

At this moment Greater Sydney is in Lockdown because of the Delta strain, it has just been extended to 30th July but I suspect it will be extended past that date unless things improve dramatically.

I was a bit worried with yesterday's figures showing no new cases in Australia (there were 69 in NSW alone) but it looks like they have been included in today's figures.

Re: Chinese Coronavirus

I forgot to mention that Victoria locked down Melbourne from midnight tonight so now Australia's two largest cities are in lockdown. That is about half of the country's total population.

It rather spoiled the news that unemployment had fallen to the lowest level for over 10 years (that was before the latest lockdown)

New restrictions in NSW

From 11:59pm today, people who live in the local government areas (LGAs) of Fairfield, Canterbury-Bankstown and Liverpool will not be allowed to leave those regions for work.

The only people exempt from the new stay-at-home orders in those areas are emergency services and health workers.

People in the aged-care and disability sectors are included as health workers.

There are several other major changes being made to the lockdown affecting Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour.

Many non-essential retail businesses will be forced to close, although they will still be able to operate "click and collect", takeaway and delivery services.

Some essential businesses, like supermarkets, and grog shops, will remain open.

Further, from 12:01am Monday, July 19:

All construction will be paused

Non-urgent maintenance, including cleaning services and repair work on residential premises will be paused

There has also been another COVID-19 death, bringing the state's number of fatalities since the start of the pandemic to 59.
