Ankara Blast Kills And Injures 'Large Number'

At least five people were killed and a large number injured after an explosion hit the Turkish capital of Ankara, reports say.

Police said a car bomb was detonated near a military headquarters, sending dark smoke billowing into the sky.

A convoy of vehicles carrying military personnel was the suspected target, according to Ankara's governor.

Local media reported the rush-hour blast was 300m in front of the Chief of Staff's Building, the base for the heads of Turkey's Army, Air Force and Navy.

At least two or three buses and several cars are believed to have been set on fire. Ambulances were seen rushing towards the scene.

Ankara's governor Mehmet Kiliclar said early estimates put the number of dead at five and the number injured at 10. It was not clear if that was expected to rise.

Omer Celik, spokesman for the ruling AK Party, said the explosion, which also occurred close to parliament and government buildings, was an act of terrorism.
