Covid: Sage scientists called for short lockdown weeks ago

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54518002

The government's scientific advisers called for a short lockdown in England to halt the spread of Covid-19 last month, newly-released documents show.

The experts said an immediate "circuit breaker" was the best way to control cases, at a meeting on 21 September.

Minutes from the meeting of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), which feeds into UK government decision making, stated the advisers had called for the immediate introduction of a short national lockdown three weeks ago.

The papers - released shortly after the No 10 news conference ended - also showed the scientists suggested:
  • banning all contact inside homes with members of other households
  • closing all bars, restaurants, cafes, indoor gyms and hairdressers
  • requiring all university and college teaching to take place online

Labour said the advice was ignored but No 10 said it took "robust" action.

However, of all the measures proposed by the advisory group, just one - advising those who can work from home to do so - was implemented by the government at the time.
The minutes from Sage said that "the more rapidly interventions are put in place, and the more stringent they are, the faster the reduction in incidence and prevalence, and the greater reduction in Covid-related deaths".

They also said NHS Test and Trace was having just a "marginal impact" and this "will likely decline further" unless the system expanded to keep up with the rise in cases.
"marginal impact" a devastating indictment of the promised "test, track and trace operation that will be world-beating" .....

BJ seems to be increasingly going his own way .....

No doubt if there had been a short lockdown half the population would have grumbled along with Lord Sumption and scientists with an opposing view . There is no way to please everyone.

There is so much nick picking going on and a distinct shortage of common sense, the message really is simple, while the virus is active avoid contact with other human beings whenever possible and if you must have contact take hygienic precautions.

Hi

Spot on.

It is our life and down to us to protect ourselves.

I do not go clubbing or to pubs full of youngsters who do not socially distance.

I go shopping at very quiet times,

I go for a meal out at a rural, family owned pub with strict precautions.

I cannot walk far, but have to exercise, so go out when there are very few about.

I wear a good mask.

Simple, basic precautions.

My biggest worry is time in Hospital.

Boris has to look after the population from a medical point of view, and he also has to balance that with the economy, from a financial point of view. He is between a rock and a hard place!

Lots of people are going to die either way, and what good is beating the virus going to do if there is nothing but unemployment, poverty and food shortages?

I admire your confidence ..... ..... have you ever thought of volunteering:

10,000 volunteers needed for coronavirus vaccine trial

https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news...ccine-18999113
People are needed to test the safety and effectiveness of the potential vaccine.

Researchers are encouraging more people to volunteer, particularly people from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, those with underlying health conditions and people over 65.
If you believe in "herd immunity" then why not become one of the "herd" .....

It's interesting to see what's happening in other European nation states. BoJo's not doing as badly as he's being made out to be. after all. In fact when the balancing of management of the pandemic Vs management of the economy he's doing pretty dammned good!

If ONLY the stupid population of some parts of the country were not so selfish AND stupid, no doubt whipped up by STUPID press and the appalling STUPID behaviour of "students" and yobs the awful situation we are now faced with would be at least not so awful as it is.
