Boris Johnson vows to set up Covid inquiry in this Parliamentary session

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-57068012

Boris Johnson has committed to setting up a public inquiry into the UK government's handling of coronavirus during the current session of Parliament.

"I can certainly say that we will do that within this session," the prime minister said, when asked during a debate in the House of Commons. "I have made that clear before... I do believe it's essential we have a full, proper public inquiry into the Covid pandemic."

There is no fixed length for a parliamentary session, although they typically last for around a year.

A group of families bereaved by Covid-19 has been calling for an urgent inquiry into the handling of the pandemic since last summer.
What BJ says and what actually happens are frequently two very different things - "Promises and Lies" .....

The results of other inquiries and court cases will have been made public before BJ's inquiry starts .....

How long does such an inquiry take on average? Will the outcome be available before next general election?

An inquiry will take as long as it takes - the inquiry into BJ's "free" Mustique holiday has already taken a year to get nowhere.

BJ has just changed the rules so that he can call an early general election if he wants but that's unlikely to be before 2022 or 2023 (according to experts).

Coronavirus public inquiry to be held in spring 2022

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57088314

An independent public inquiry into the handling of the coronavirus pandemic will be held in spring 2022, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has told MPs.

Mr Johnson said the government was "fully committed to learning the lessons at every stage of this crisis".

The inquiry will place "the state's actions under the microscope", he added, and take evidence under oath.

But Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer questioned why the inquiry could not start earlier, such as later in 2021.

The Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK group has been calling for the inquiry to begin this summer, saying that learning lessons from the pandemic "is critical to saving lives now and in the future".

Mr Johnson said because of the threat of new coronavirus variants and a possible winter surge in infections, spring would be the best time to hold the inquiry.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer called for clarification on whether the inquiry will be formally opening in spring or whether that will be when work begins to establish the inquiry.
It seems that BJ, having made a "promise" is now procrastinating .....

Hi

Look at the Grenfell Inquiry for a basis.

Boris has said next Spring which is 2022, then a year for consultation and organisation, so 2023 before hearings start.

The hearings will take years.

Re: Boris Johnson vows to set up Covid inquiry in this Parliamentary session

BJ talks the talk:

https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-...-2022-12304332

Boris Johnson revealed the news in a COVID-19 statement to MPs on Wednesday, telling the Commons it will be able to take oral evidence under oath and put "the state's actions under the microscope".

The PM says the state "has an obligation" to examine its actions "rigorously" and "candidly" and "learn every lesson".

He did not reveal when the inquiry would be expected to produce its final report, saying only: "I think we owe it to the country to have as much transparency as we possibly can and we owe it to the country to produce answers in a reasonable timescale."

Downing Street declined to say whether it will report back before the next general election, which is due in 2024. "The timescale is down to the chairman, that is something that we will want to agree with the chairperson when they are appointed," the PM's spokesman said.
Under questioning from Sir Keir, Mr Johnson confirmed that preparatory work to establish the inquiry's terms of reference and its chair "will happen before the spring of next year. We will be getting it under way, we will be taking some key decisions," he added.
The 2021-22 session started with the State Opening on 11 May 2021. All BJ intends to do by May 2022 is start the paperwork and appoint a mouthpiece .....

Perhaps the truly "independent" reports due out before then will provide an insight into the government's disastrous reponse to the pandemic.

More than 127,000 people have died within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test since the pandemic began last year, while more than 150,000 deaths have mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate.
Many others were infected and died but their symptoms were unrecognised, their details unrecorded or, worse, their names were redacted by rule changes .....
