I don't have one but my grandchildren do and carry their own water bottles and waterproofs.

I have small backpacks for hiking trips, or in the past going swimming. I would never dream of using them for anything else. Although it's something I used to use a lot when I was a student attending courses or before every flight became hand luggage-restricted on flights. Some men seem to love them and baffling what they stow away in there. It's like they are attached to their backpack like a tortoise.

I couldn’t think what to call them, first l thought ‘napsack’ but thought that was a bit... so last year!

I googled ‘napsack’ and it came up with ‘backpack’. Now on here, l see ‘rucksack’ and l think that might have been the best word for a bag you carry on your back.

I've tried messenger bags of various sizes but they got in my way when the country pursuits involved strenuous activity .....
