I watched a chain making demonstration at the Avoncroft Museum of Buildings. The work and the narrative was very interesting, especially the story of how ladies would make small chain at home and babies would be brought up to the gentle tap of hammers.

The bigger chains would be made in a heavy duty forge, usually by men.

I lived for two years in the 80's in Cradley and worked in Cradley Heath, both were the centre of the chain making industry in earlier years. I had a temporary job in the office of a forging business, but was glad it was only an Agency job as the noise was horrific.

I have been to the Black Country Museum several times. The best chips ever are sold in one of the shops. Old fashioned, cooked in lard.
