Blood pressure

After the high readings last weekend I'll give you an update.
We're all getting older and the older you get the higher the risk of high BP.

12 years ago I was grossly overweight (17.5 stones) I had no idea I had high BP, I went for a routine eye test and the optician told me to see my GP as she thought my BP was high, they can see this in your eyes.

Went to the docs at that time and it was 216/105, he put me on Bendrofluizide and Lisinopril (2.5mg each tablet).
He also gave me a ticking off about my weight so I made an extra effort to reduce it, I cut out all the goodies like crisps and sweet treats and eventually the weight came off.

After a year I was down to 14 stones, the doc was well pleased, I bought my own BP monitor and continued with the 2 drugs for a couple of years, eventually I was getting readings of 140/47, I spoke to my doc and asked if it was OK to stop the drugs and he agreed.

I still check my BP occasionally and it's been normal over the last 5 years but the high readings recently are just a glitch IMO, however we shall see, high BP can be caused by hypertension unless you have an underlying medical condition like blocked arteries etc,

Executives attending board meetings where contentious arguments break out into full blown arguments have been known to have very high BP readings so I'm putting my recent high readings down to this coz I've had a few problems myself recently as you all know.

One thing does bother me however, the dosage recommended in the leaflet the tabs came in is 2.5mg to start with for the first few weeks, my doc has given me 10mg tabs.

Denis, when I was in my twenties I had high BP and the Doc said it was 'Residual Hypertension' and nothing to worry about. I've always been about correct weight for height 'tho a little over now

Ten years ago I was having a routine check up and the Doc nearly had a coronary himself when he read my BP and sent me straight to hospital where (after loads of tests etc) they put me on Co-Tenidol and Lisinopril (Can't remember the dosage) and I'm supposed to take them every day for the rest of my life my BP is now normal (or even slightly below) but never comming off the tablets........they say

Sorry I seem to have missed the thread about your problems, hope you're over it now 'tho.

Re: Blood pressure

Nero, I don't know about the amounts but he is the Dr. and he is treating you as a whole with any other complications you may have so do keep that in mind. I really like my Dr. and do question him at times because I hate drugs I can do without but he and I do know that my BP medicine is a must.

My Dr. said his Dad used to tell him, his BP went up because he was at the Dr. Now this is a Dr. he has seen many times and likes so much since they have a good old talk about baseball every time they see each other. Anyway he told his Dad if your BP goes up for a simple thing like that, what would it would have been a highly emotional situation, it could have been a stroke.

I hate meds and all their side effects but sometimes you just have to have them and especially as we age. Hope this will work for you and keep you well. Hugs Your wife is a great nurse.

A healthy diet and lifestyle is so important Nero.

Whenever I feel 'ill' or am not well I try to revert back to as close as nature as possible..

Hope you get well soon!

Very good point Azz, you are what you eat and exercise is worth it's weight in gold.

Nero, now don't you just hate all this advise, just remember it is meant to help you. No one is perfect in taking care of themselves but if we are pretty good in alot of areas it helps us live a long good quality of life.

Re: Blood pressure

I've been through the whole schmeer in the past, . . a few years ago when I was fat they sent me to the top heart specialist in Edinburgh, they wired me up like an Astronaut and put me on a bike, they really take you to the limit, I was on the point of collapse when they helped me off then laid me on a trolley, I had to keep still for 15 mins while the electrocardiograph machine took readings.

The doc stood back when all was done and said I was fitter than he was.

After the infected finger saga when I extracted the muck that was inside it last Saturday, I have no faith in my GP, he had 14 months to get THAT fixed but in the end I had to do it myself, I was really angry about that one.
The dressing casualty applied on Sunday lasted 15 mins then came off, who on earth puts a tube dressing on without any sticky tape ? another angry moment.

All these seemingly minor incidents add to ones stress levels, how many of you feel the NHS is inadequate ? how many of you have been angry at the treatment or lack of treatment you or those close to you have had, it all adds up don't it.

Nobody seems accountable any more, I could write a letter to the local health board about my GP but who gives a damn, all they want is an easy time drawing in their salaries.

I wish I was an immigrant, I could sue them for discrimination.

Footnote, . . . to calm down I'm gonna watch something stress-free on TV, . . . . "The World at War".

Re: Blood pressure

When you have to scream for good care, it has to be so frustrating. I didn't know about all you went through with your finger and other situations. When a Dr. gets a salary no matter what quality of work he does, it's sad. I am afraid we may be on that road here in the states. Obama knows our wonderful health system is costing us so much that we will be thinking of the big 'D' if we don't do something about it. We have wonderful care but not everyone is covered so I am willing to give up some of my medicare to make sure everyone is covered but I don't want government health care. Over 65 and disabled are taken care of but the millions in the other age groups can't afford the cost any longer and if you lose your job you are offered Cobra, it's expensive and with only the portion of your salary you get when you are laid off, who can afford it. I think the quality of health care is the most important thing we can have in life but in this economy something has to be done and believe me it will not please everyone here.

Re: Blood pressure

I'll give you all an example of the medical care we get here, we have a local hospital in town, quite a big one too but half of it is closed.

Phone the docs for an appointment, - there's a two weeks waiting period, if you're dying phone NHS 24.

Waiting for X-Ray results, - anything up to 2 weeks.

Dental care, - If you're not registered with a dentist, forget it, or go to casualty outpatients.

ENT, we have a local hospital in town but they don't treat there, we have to travel to Stirling - 12 miles away.

Opthalmic problems, - Stirling, - 12 miles away.

Cardiac arrest, - Stirling - 12 miles away.

Paediatrics, - Stirling - 12 miles away.

Oncology - Stirling - 12 miles away.

The only thing Falkirk Infirmary treats are minor injuries, everything else goes to Stirling.

They are building a new hospital but we've been waiting for that since 1988.

Re: Blood pressure

We have a lovely hospital very modern and clean and Shrewsbury 20 miles away have one too that is about 20 years older and now they are going to cut all accident and emergency at ours and move it to Shrewsbury also pediatrics and trauma...
My MIL was in there last year and it is grotty and dirty and the nurses just don't want to know... Where is the justice in this ...
I personally have no faith in the medical proffesion end of story
