Re: Goa

Yes, went there years ago. Beautiful place and very cheap. Local transport is INTERESTING!!!. Huge gap between rich and poor. It is about 15years or so since we were there. Things may have changed. I remember we hired a taxi for a day with another couple and we went down an unmade road, we had to stop while women were putting stones into round bowls, carrying them on their heads to the centre of the road to fill in the holes and then a couple of mem had poles with a square metal weight to stamp the stones into place. Our driver said that their pay would be a few rupees a day. Just enough to feed themselves with a very basic meal. If there happened to be a cow asleep in the road everything had to go round it as they are sacred.
It was a wonderful experience but the humidity is awful and you need to drink loads of water, but only ever from a supermarket with a properly sealed top.

Re: Goa

Someone I used to work with went there every year, still does I guess, he loved it and used to have to come back and detox, it appeared to be a round of parties and drinking where he went. But he did use to say the poverty made him feel very guilty so drinking was his way of coping with that.

Re: Goa

Grandfather worked on the Indian State Railway in Kerala (the state immediately South of Goa) and I spent 6 - 7 months with them out there.
